Holland Dance Events 2008/2009

Also in the 2008/2009 season, The Holland Dance Festival and Lucent Danstheater present a special series of Holland Dance Events. Guest programmer Samuel Wuersten again managed to put together an highly acclaimed international programme:





Royal Ballet of Flanders
The Return of Ulysses

For twenty years Penelope had waited for the return of her husband, King Odysseus of Ithaca, who had gone off to do battle with the city of Troy. The Return of Ulysses, which the German choreographer Christian Spuck wrote for the Royal Ballet of Flanders, is a ballet about Penelope’s endless wait. It is about hopeful hopelessness, the pressure from the power-hungry suitors who wished to take Odysseus’ place and about the great moment of his return, when Penelope no longer recognises her husband.

The Royal Ballet of Flanders was founded in 1969 and is currently the only Belgian classical ballet company. The 2005-2006 season was the first under the Artistic Direction of Kathryn Bennetts.

Our company consists of talented, enthusiastic and disciplined artists from all over the world. With respect for the past and a passion for what the future brings, Bennetts wants to strike a balance between innovation and tradition, seeking to define the place of ballet in contemporary society.

Pilobolus Dance Theatre

Founded in 1971, the Pilobolus Dance Theatre remain a sensation. The dancers of this American company produce the most beautiful images with unprecedented physical combinations and gravity-defying movements. The world-famous group appeared for the first time in the Netherlands at the Holland Festival in 1973. “A genuine revolution in academic dance”, wrote Trouw at the time. The company is returning to The Hague after an absence of three years. The company recently premièred a number of new works in New York, from which it has selected some highlights for the Dutch tour.

Past Events 2008:

Giubileo - Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel
Krisztina de Châtel/ Michele Pogliani/ Stephen Shropshire
A jubilee and a farewell tour rolled into one, that's Giubileo. The cause for celebration is the 30th anniversary of the Krisztina de Châtel Dance Group. De Châtel will present a new choreography of her own and has invited a number of distinguished guests to liven up the festivities. Stephen Shropshire presents a new work based on cello music by Eric Moe. The Italian choreographer Pogliani presents a story full of contrasts between light and dark. Students of the Rotterdam Dance Academy will also shine alongside the De Châtel dancers. The accompanying exhibition entitled 30 years of the Krisztina de Châtel Dance Group is a journey through time that will stir recollections for many people.
Giubileo is also the company's farewell tour. At the beginning of 2009 choreographer Krisztina de Châtel will be launching a new ensemble, Dansgroep Amsterdam, with Itzik Galili. This will be an evening of looking back and looking ahead.

Air Condition - Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance
The spectacular public success of the Holland Dance Festival 2005 is back! The flying dancers of the Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company (Argentina) present the only performance in the Netherlands of their new show Air Condition in The Hague. The best way of explaining what the members of this company are is to say what they are not. They are not circus artists or marionettes. Although they cling to ropes, swing and tumble through the air, make cartwheels and somersaults, they are not performing pranks or tricks but dancing in the air. It is aerial dance, or choreography for flying dancers
