Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company (2)
Perhaps the best way to explain what the members of Brenda Angiel's Aerial Dance Company are, is to make clear what they are not. They are not circus performers, nor are they marionettes. Though they are attached to ropes, twirling, swinging, turning cartwheels and somersaulting through the air, they are not performing tricks. Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company's physically demanding performances are dance. Or, to put it more precisely, modern dance in the air. Or: aerial dance, as the company's founder and choreographer calls it.
Brenda Angiel was born in Buenos Aires. She studied modern dance, ballet, improvisation, composition, and theatre. From 1988 to 1991 she lived in New York to gain experience in the artistic world. Her company, which is based in Buenos Aires, was initially oriented toward dance theatre and contemporary dance. Since 1994 she has completely devoted herself to aerial dance - choreography for dancers in flight, giving the very notion of gravity a whole new meaning. Angiel's work isn't narrative; it's abstract. She experiments with form, space and composition.
The Holland Dance Festival is exceedingly pleased to present the performance Vuelos Aires (Air Flights) from the Brenda Angiel Aerial Dance Company - a European premiere. Fasten your seatbelts!
